SARAH SHANNON
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER
TERRACED HOUSE PROJECT
City Quay, Dundee
This project was to design a terraced house for a young, middle-class couple. They are passionate about the outdoors and baking. The plot is a 10m by 5.5m plot with a 15m height restriction.
Plot 1 is at the end of the dry docks, there is water on all three side of the plot. I felt strongly about making it a destination, somewhere for people to gather and socialize. To achieve this there are plans for a small play park and the ground floor of the property is entirely dedicated to the public realm except for the internal staircase which is to gain access to the private dwelling above. The bakery takes up half of the ground floor providing a covered garden area, which is still external.
The design was created around the staircase, which is the central core of the building. The staircase is entirely glazed providing the building with natural light. The glazing has been carved out of the core of the building to provide an outside, inside space in which a tree has been planted that can be seen from each floor of the house connecting all levels within the building.
