SOUTH QUEENSFERRY LIBRARY
South Queensferry
This project was to design a new library to replace the existing library building. The site looks out on to the forth road, rail bridge and soon to be the third new bridge. This allows for spectacular views all year round.
South Queensferry is under extensive re-development plans which includes upgrading the pedestrian environment, expanding parking facilities, and extending the town centre in order to rebalance the activity within the town. This meant the regeneration of the library was crucial as it is in the heart of the town.
I decided to locate the building on the site boundary to create a connection between the library and the high street. This also allows for an external garden area at the rear. The building itself was developed on the idea that different areas would function for certain activities. On the ground floor you enter through and extended walkway thus creating a threshold. On entering, the ground floor is tiered with a ramp running the perimeter of the building; this creates a flow of circulation. Each tier holds a different section of the library whether it be the adult section, snug, children’s area, group study or private study. Each area is separated by a wall of books which is open at either side to allow light to filter through the building in interesting ways.
The first floor is home to a café which is open to the public, although in order to reach the café they have to travel through the library. There is also small meeting rooms that can be rented out.
